About Art & Alchemy Gallery & Studio

A  boutique gallery and studio in the Dandenong Ranges showcasing Australian artists and offering intimate, high-quality art classes and creative experiences.

Built in the 1920's, we have three galleries showcasing Australian artists and a cosy studio space offering high-quality, small-group experiences that nurture artistic expression and inspire connection, curiosity and creative exploration.

We are found at a three way meeting point, locally refererd to as five waysOn our intersection you will find our gallery, the Kalorama Lookout which has beautiful views of the Silvan Dam, and the Destiny Point Cafe, offering a beautiful destination whether you are local, or travelling out from the city. Enjoy the view, a drink and immerse yourself in the art.

In January 2026 Karly Michelle Edgar became the director of what was then known as Kapi Art Space with director Heather Bradbury. Karly's approach to art and creativity encouraged has facilitated a wider range of artforms being represented in the gallery space as well as in the teaching focus. She works with local artists to produce an engaging art school program that includes a variety of mediums. While currently focused on teaching adults, she hopes to expand into classes for younger folk as well.

Why Art & Alchemy?

The name Art & Alchemy was chosen to reflect the idea that alchemy, the transmutation of one material to another, is mirrored in the creative process, were artists take simple materials, and make simple lines and marks to transform the materials into art that is more than the sum of the original parts. Gold in another form.

Our Mission

To cultivate a beautiful, intimate space where creativity flourishes — showcasing Australian artists, nurturing artistic exploration, and offering high-quality, creative experiences that inspire connection, curiosity, and personal expression.

Our Brand Values

1. Creative Exploration

We believe creativity thrives in environments that invite curiosity, experimentation, and play. Our gallery and studio are designed to encourage people to explore, play and reconnect with their creative selves.

2. Boutique Quality and personal connection

We prioritise personal connection, quality, intimate and meaningful experiences over scale.

Genuine engagement are at the heart of everything we do. Our class sizes are small, providing quality interaction, personalised guidance and a welcoming, human-centred experience.

3. Celebration of Australian Artists

We champion local creativity by showcasing diverse Australian artists across traditional and contemporary mediums. Our gallery is a platform for artistic expression, storytelling, and community connection.

4. Beauty as an essential quality of life

Situated in the Dandenong Ranges, opposite the Silvan Dam Lookout and along the Ngurrak Barring Art Trail, our identity is deeply tied to the landscape and to the essential nature of beauty in and of everyday life.  We honour the beauty, calm, and inspiration of our surroundings in everything we offer.

5. Accessibility & Joyful Participation

We aim to always be working towards making creativity evermore inviting and achievable for everyone.

6. Thoughtful Curation & Ethical Practice

We aim to always operate with integrity, care, and respect — towards artists, participants, the environment, and our community. This includes respecting artists, teachers and workers with fair pay, engaging experienced teachers and artists to provide engaging and high quality classes, encouraging participants to engage to their ability while always working towards more sustainable and ethical practices.
