Tania McCallum

Tania is an emerging artist living in the town of Healesville, in the beautiful Yarra Valley. She celebrates the quiet philosophy of Wabi Sabi, creating layered, abstract tonal artwork, forming bridges between the natural world and the living spaces we inhabit.
Tania utilises a palette of clay plaster, lime, tannin washes and mineral powders, using traditional Tadelakt burnishing with black olive soap and natural waxes. The resulting pieces carry a profound tactile energy. Tania often chooses to work outside even in the cold of Winter, loves hot cacao, architecture and the cocooning comfort of well designed living spaces. “
A dream I have is to live in a house surrounded by light, nature and walls either made of clay or at least finished in clay plaster!”
Her artwork is grounded in earthy neutrals and by capturing the beauty of imperfection and the passage of time Tania invites the organic stillness into our home interiors.

How Tania makes her art
​
​Each piece starts with an idea from nature like moss on a rock. I apply a first layer of clay plaster to my board with a pigment powder added if I am using a second layer and want a contrasting colour to show through. A second layer follows. Then I apply washes and pools of liquid allowing colours to mingle and merge. I use sanding paper to smooth areas and some are left deliberately rough. I repeat the wash process many times enjoying the experimental process, When finally content I use a wax or olive soap to seal the work.
