Ceramics
Glenn England started her formal ceramics training in 1981 at Bendigo School of Mines. In 1985 she completed a Bachelor of Arts (Ceramic Design) at Monash University, Caulfield and in 1996 a Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts (Ceramics), Monash University. Before retiring and establishing her studio in the Dandenong Ranges Glenn taught ceramics in the TAFE system. She has won numberous awards, had solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous joint and group exhibitions and is represented in Collections in Australia and overseas.
Glenn Artist Statement
I work with soft colours and textures, natural forms based on seedpods and lines and patterns to create my interpretation of the environment I live in.
I discovered clay in my mid-twenties. Something just clicked and I realised that despite having tried a number of arts and crafts I was very much a 3-dimensional person. I had found my creative outlet.
It wasn’t until some years later that I was able to take up clay seriously. In 1981 I enrolled in the Certificate of Ceramics course at Bendigo School of Mines. I have been working with clay ever since. Along the way I have taken on further studies and I taught ceramics for many years.
I make both functional ceramics and more decorative, sculptural pieces. Form is very important in my work and the vessel form is predominant. I tend to work in series, often having several on the go at once with one series of work morphing into the next.
I love the rhythm and meditative aspect of working with clay on a pottery wheel. I also enjoy developing my own glazes. The most exciting aspect of pottery is opening the kiln to reveal the surprises within.
Moving to the Yarra Ranges when I retired gave me a wealth of inspiration. When I walk in the bush or work in my garden, I appreciate the overall picture but I also see the tiny details: the sundew, the small piece of lichen or the speckles on a bird’s egg.
