Sunday November 1st 1.30-3.30pm Teacher: Karly Michelle Edgar Open Taking a delicate and respectful approach, Karly will lead you through the process of engaging in creativity as a means of remembrance. The period around Halloween and All Souls is rich with traditions and rituals in many cultures. This session may be particularly relevant if you feel disconnected from any culturally based ritual practices, or if you are in the process or re/developing your own sense of ritual and ritual practice. While acknowledging and respecting all cultural practices and traditions you may come with or wish to explore, this session presents a non-religious foundation, while encouraging participants to explore what may suit them best. There are many rituals and traditions that are similar across various cultures, which may be used as examples only of how other people and cultures may engage in the process of mourning & remembering. Participants will be encouraged to draw from their own cultural history & tradition.If they find they no longer resonate with them, to see if they can transform them into something new. Please note that while this session is not primarily for participants to share about their own experiences with those who have passed, death and dying will be topics of conversation. Note that primarily any sharing will be encouraged to be confined to the process of the participants' engagement in their own development of ritual. It is important to note, that unlike many art classes where being social and sharing is often encouraged, there may be times of requested silence, or of individual working, in order to facilitate a safe environment. About your facilitator: Karly’s career blends creative practice with academic inquiry, rooted in her engagement with creativity as ritual and spiritual expression. Her masters thesis, Myth, Imagination and the Eucharist, examined her evolving relationship with spiritual ritual and the development of personal mythologies, a theme echoed in her ritualistic creative work. Her PhD, sponsored by a palliative care organisation, explored clients’ experiences in a biography‑writing program, deepening her understanding of storytelling at end‑of‑life. Her work in aged care has further shaped her appreciation for thoughtful, honest conversations about death, dying.
