Creative Wellbeing At Art & Alchemy
Develop Your Creativity
Don't let AI convince you otherwise... you are creative!
From Karly, Art & Alchemy Gallery Director:
I'm sitting here and the weather is just beautiful! Tomorrow is a public holiday for a rather particular reason, but if that reason is not necessarily your thing, consider visiting us in the hills! We are having our first Creative Community Friday from 10.30 -12.30 if you’d like to join us, or just visit the gallery and pick up some beautiful jewellery to match the change of season and clothing we need for this beautiful warmer weather!
One of my main interests is creative development - not just the development of technique (which is important) but the development of creative thinking, problem solving, and adaptation. I have a chronic illness and engaging in creativity as a form of wellbeing has become a significant element of learning to live within and adapt to that experience.
It also led to a very mixed media form artist engagement where I am as often led by the materials as by an initial idea I am trying to convey or play with. This is being reflected more in some of the classes I am teaching such as the Enhancing Creative Wellbeing class where we will look at how creative engagement can be so beneficial for our wellbeing - for anyone, not just artists! It will include activities you can easily do at home and invite you to consider how you might incorporate daily or weekly activities into your life.
I’ll be teaching a Creative Rituals for Remembrance for All Souls which will be a gentle session of considering how to develop rituals and practices in remembrance of others (or perhaps for grief more generally). How we engage with rituals and similar practices has long been an interest of mine and been part of my various studies and I believe that (helpful) rituals are inherently creative in their development. Please make sure you read the description to see if this will be appropriate for you though. For both the Enhancing Creative Wellbeing and Rituals session, they can be described as therapeutic but are not therapy.
I’m offering another Life Storytelling session after it went so well last term, this time a slightly shorter midweek version which will be ideal for anyone who would like to record some form of story telling legacy, or would like to help others tell theirs using. Life storytelling is an umbrella term which can encompass a few different approaches, and in this session I will be focused on legacy leaving (writing or creative to leave for family) or for personal reasons rather than memoir publishing.
In the very near future we will be welcoming Mary McCowan to our Salon space, for her exhibition Gathered. You are invited to her exhibition opening event on Sunday 18th October (not long!) and to her workshop titled A Gathering which is an intuitive mixed media exploration of materials, tools and techniques. You can book in here and this is a workshop for anyone who would like to learn more about either her process, or about engaging creatively - artist or not - no experience is needed.
Check out the other classes we have coming up below - term 4 starts very soon - don't miss out!
(Sally's watercolour class on the 4th Oct has already sold out! Please email me if you'd like to go on a wait list. Don't delay if you are interested in any of the other classes.)

Spotlight on Exhibition Gathered
I'm really looking forward to Mary McCowan's exhibition 'Gathered' in our Salon Space starting on 14th Oct with a free opening event on Sunday Oct 18th 2.30-4.30 (see below). Mary's work is a deeply personal collection, developed from her daily, creative and spiritual practice as she reflects on her experience of the world. She creates using everyday materials that reflect how she lives in the world and she builds up her work through repetition. She has a beautiful, reflective, intuitive style that she has developed over many years. During her opening event we will hear a little bit more about her process and creative engagement and in November she will be running a Sunday class about intuitive art making to invite others to find their own way into a daily practice.
